Innovation Fund

The Innovation Fund is an IPPF funded programme that stimulates Member Associations to be creative and to think out of the box. The Innovation Programme tests new ideas and approaches to solving some of today's greatest sexual and reproductive health and rights challenges. The Innovation Programme connects local expertise with global knowledge to find new and effective ways to improve people’s sexual and reproductive health. The Member Associations in the Europe region have been quite successful in their applications, mostly focussing on advocacy. This is a programme which allows experimentation but then learns from both success and failure.

Improving contraceptive care in Tajikistan

Young people are often denied care in societies where sex is taboo and parents can control their children’s access to medical providers. These challenges are amplified in conservative contexts where women and girls are made to feel uncomfortable when talking about contraception. The Tajikistan Family Planning Association (TFPA) has pioneered a phone application - available free of charge - that allows young people to gain crucial knowledge about modern contraception and sexually transmitted infections/HIV and connects them with health care providers. Through its innovative app, TFPA has created a safe space for young people to access stigma-free care, and to explore methods of sexual and reproductive self-care. This app has changed attitudes towards people living with STIs/HIV and inspired young people to have open and honest conversations about sexual and reproductive health care with their peers. "Before using the app, she thought STIs could only be caught by sex workers or people lacking morals, and that something like that could never happen to her or to her close friends. But now she realises that it can happen to anyone, even by accident. Now she tries to understand people who might have an STI." Tajik Family Planning Alliance

The Tajikistan Family Planning Association (TFPA) is a voluntary, self-governed, non-profit organization. It exists to deliver information and services, and to advocate for the basic human right of all women, men and young people to make free and informed choices regarding their sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR).

TFPA plays a major role in disseminating information and providing clinical services. Special emphasis is given to the:

  • Prevention and treatment of HIV and AIDS and sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
  • Prevention of unwanted pregnancy
  • Prevention of unsafe abortion

TFPA reaches out to marginalized communities in remote and economically disadvantaged areas of the country.

TFPA was officially registered at the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Tajikistan in 2002 after the General Assembly elected the Board of Directors and approved the organization charter and its structure. In 2008 TFPA was accredited and became a full IPPF Member Association.
