A documentary on teenage mothers in Romania, entitled "Let`s Talk about Sex", will be shown on Arte Regards on Wednesday 15 November at 14:00 (CET). Romania and Bulgaria have the highest percentage of teenage mothers in the EU. Nearly one in ten births in both countries were from teenagers in 2015, three times the EU average, and in Romania alone that year, 18,000 girls under the age of 20 gave birth. This is the unfortunate reality when so many schools choose to forego sexuality education. A repressive patricarchal society coupled with a misogynistic culture in Romania is fuelling the problem.
One of the main figures in the documentary is Daniela Draghici, an Advisory Board member of the Society for Education in Contraception and Sexuality (SECS), our member in Romania. Daniela has been advocating towards policymakers for many years about the consequences of a lack of sexuality education in schools, against the background of increasingly strong opposition. The documentary was shot by Sorin Manu and directed by Robert Jahn for ARTE Regards. It is dubbed in German and French.
