French Embassy Thursday, January 23rd at 4:30 p.m.
Calle de Salustiano Olózaga, 9 Madrid
The reform of the abortion law that Spanish Government is preparing will eliminate women's right to decide to continue or not with their pregnancy, as they can do with the actual law. Additionally, this project deprives once again professionals of the legal certainty that the current legislative framework provides.
Therefore, from the platform Decidir Nos Hace Libres we encourage women, men and health professionals to come on Thursday 23rd at 4:30 pm to the French embassy to seek legal protection and asylum.
This bill doesn't take into consideration that Sexual and Reproductive Rights are Human Rights, recognized in international agreements signed by Spain and that in case of abortion woman’s choice should prevail. Nobody can compel women to act according to others conscience or against their own conscience.
For professionals, it's women’s choice that makes abortion possible, being their obligation to ensure safety, welfare and to provide proper support. This is something possible under the existing law and that will not be allowed in the future legislation.
To request asylum is the first step. With this petition we want to show that the reform can bring thousands of Spanish women and women living in Spain to abort illegally with the consequent risks to their health or to travel abroad if they can afford it.
The asylum request will be received by a representation of the French embassy in Spain in order to transmit it to the French Government.
