The Sofia Declaration of Committment

On 27 May, 150 ministers and government officials, parliamentarians, civil society leaders, youth activists, and experts from Eastern Europe and Central Asia gathered in Sofia to call for people and their rights to be at the heart of development for their region. They emphasised that universal access to sexual and reproductive health is central to making this a reality.

This regional declaration will feed into United Nations negotiations on the future global development framework which will be agreed this September.

IPPF EN’s Regional Director, Vicky Claeys (pictured, centre), addressed the conference on behalf of civil society, calling on governments to recognise the important role NGOs can play in helping to address the challenges, and emphasising that working together is win-win for all involved.

This regional conference was hosted by the United Nations Population Fund and the Bulgarian government.
